RICHARD CALLNER has been one of the region’s premiere painters for thirty years. Raised in Chicago, after service in World War II Callner studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and received a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University. He was founding director of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Rome, and recipient of a Fulbright professorship in Yugoslavia.
In 1975, Callner came to the University at Albany to begin the MFA program, where he taught until retirement in 1993. His paintings display a complex use of color and texture. Throughout his half-century career, he has ranged through motifs in Hebrew mythology, landscape, and abstraction.
Callner has been the subject of major retrospectives at UAlbany’s University Art Museum and the Albany Institute of History & Art. His work is in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Chicago Art Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia.
“The Lucca Paintings and Color Abstraction Series” are his most recent works.
