Cut narrow strips of cotton bedsheet on the bias (diagonally) and lay them on while painting with marine epoxy. When the shell hardens, smooth with a dremel half-inch drumsander and files. Coat again with epoxy and thickener and smooth again. You should have something like the above. Not a lot of detail, but how much detail do you really need?
Before you start wrapping, force the stick down through the clay so you have something on both ends to hold on to and clamp in the vise while wrapping. It's good to have a "handle" on both ends of the piece.
